Is Mindfulness the new Buzz word?

There is an awful lot written about mindfulness lately. Articles state the benefits of being mindful and meditating as:

10 Surprising Health Benefits of Mindfulness Meditation

  • Get better sleep. …
  • Make progress toward your weight-loss goals. …
  • Lower your stress levels. …
  • Decrease loneliness in seniors. …
  • Banish temporary negative feelings. …
  • Improve attention. …
  • Manage chronic pain. …
  • Help prevent depression relapse.

But what is it really? and more importantly how can we start a practice? Being mindful is simply being aware of what you’re doing, as you’re doing it, and what thoughts you have as you are doing the action. Being mindful is not labeling your thoughts as good or bad. For me, I had to practice yoga a lot to even be aware of my current actions and thoughts. Before yoga, I just simple DID. I went from thing to thing, trying to get work done, kids fed, work out’s in, etcetera, etcetera….. I was not aware of my actions or what kind of effect they had on me or others. That is ok, because I believe many of us are like that.

As I did my yoga practice, it all stems from loving myself more fully. I showed up to practice, because I was really make a statement (s).

  • I want to be healthy.
  • I want to love myself more.
  • This yoga makes me feel good.

The action of being mindful started when I came to yoga (action), and showed up for me. Slowly the yoga started to break down my barriers, and I realized I couldn’t be angry at that car that almost made me crash, because last week, I did the same thing. What I’m saying is this. Yoga practice makes you accountable. We all want to point fingers, and say it is another’s problem about global warming. But it’s our very actions that add to global warming; everyday that add up to small changes. When we realize the truth of this, we start to make changes. Changes in our purchases, changes in how we interact with family and friends; and changes how we treat ourselves. (addictions).

Yoga practice will make you more mindful. Being Mindful can be taught, but I believe it’s best undertaken with Yoga practice. When you work on yourself, you change the world for the better.

See you on the mat,

Paula
